How I Create a Large Mixed Media Painting on Canvas
This is a look at the process how I create a large mixed media painting on canvas, from the first layers to the finished piece.
The very first thing I do is cover my canvas (36x24x1.5 in.) with a base layer of color. For this piece, I started with bright pink.
I print my photo in 12 separate 8 × 9-inch sections and arrange them on the canvas. I then transfer each section separately, carefully aligning them to recreate the complete image.
Painting the piece
I get my paints out and choose a loose palette for the piece. I don’t plan all the colors in advance, but I know there will always be yellow, pink, and blue on my palette. From there, I let the colors develop as I paint.
I often start painting with yellow. It’s such a bright, happy color and immediately brings this type of energy to the piece.
And then, after many layers of paint and adjustments along the way, I was done.
